EU Could Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson States

The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures that were central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming part of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.
