Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Major Role in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

Australia's selection chief George Bailey has confirmed that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that Cummins might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations involved, aside from the physical problem, but additional elements," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. Ideally it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Past Concerns

Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from three Australian summers in a limited period.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches anyway. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, should it hinder progress for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
