The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — A New Category May Address This Issue

As any major honors show nears, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. This is the request: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of video games, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these award types successfully include a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones for gaming as medium, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier game development, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
